Sensory Tools

Whether your child sees an OT or not, they will likely benefit from some sensory tools.  From fidgets to hammocks, these tools can be life-changing for your child's overall well being.
Rebounder
from JumpSport

This rebounder is a permanent piece of furniture in our house,
It's spendier than the ones you see on Amazon, but the quality of this one is unreal.  It's so sturdy, has a smooth, almost 'glide-like" bounce, is quiet (thank you!), and has been going strong around here for 7 years.

Sensory Sock
from Sanho

This was probably the very first sensory tool I bought.  Our OT recommended it, and boy was it a good purchase.  My son lived in this for a couple years.  He loved the "push back" on his limbs.  It's lightweight and breathable.  And, he sure looked like a cute little starfish in it!

Hammock Chair
from Ozark Trail

Many sensory kiddos love swinging in a hammock.  The swaying motion can help them, and also the "snug" feel of being inside a dark place.  Our OT, as well as many sensory families, recommended a hanging hammock.  Unfortunately, as a renter, I couldn't install a hanging hammock in the house beams.  So finding standing, portable hammocks was awesome.

Hammock
from PNAEUT

My son LOVES this hammock!  I sometimes walk outside and just see his little feet sticking up out of it!  The cotton fabric really "wraps" around his body, and it hangs lower to the ground than some, which doesn't give him that scary feeling of being up too high.

It's a great place for tired, stressed-out parents to chill too!

Yoga Ball
from Trideer

This ball was one of my kiddo's favorites...however, all the rolling around drove me crazy!    But, because I knew it was so good for his body, I dealt with it.  He could wrap his body almost flush either forward or backward (great stretching), bounce on it when he couldn't sit still, push or roll it around the house, and bounce it like a ball.  Those are a lot of full-body inputs all in one tool!

Crash Pad
from Millard

My kiddo loved the crash pad at his OT sessions, but adding one at home is a game changer.  When they're more wound up, extra physical, and bouncing off the walls, they are signaling to us that they need extra big-body input.

Enter:  crash pad.

Giving them a space to actually crash their bodies as much as they want  without getting in trouble or damaging anything else is empowering to them.  They need to know they have a space where they can get that physical energy out in a productive, safe way.

Sensory Supplementation
Because our sensory food aversion kiddos can often lack important nutrition from foods, it's helpful to add vitamins/minerals where we can.  These are some of my favorites that give my kiddo a splattering of key nutrients.  Notice that they're not all pills either!  Score!
Multigreens
from Young Living

Greens is the one thing my kiddo still isn't getting enough of.  I feel less guilty knowing he's getting the green phytonutrients in these. Especially the choline, which feeds the brain.  And back when he couldn't swallow pills, I would open these capsules and hide the powder in baked goods.  Shhhhh!!!

As if giving them their greens wasn't enough of a benefit, these beauties are also powerful at helping regulate emotions (it was originally formulated for anxiety and depression).  Um, pass me the bottle please!!!

Multivitamin
from Hiya

For years I was searching for a healthy kids multi, but never found one with ingredients I was happy about.  Unfortunately, my kiddo would only take the gummy versions, but they were LOADED with sugar!  I was thrilled to find this one that wasn't a gummy, had clean ingredients, and had such a committment to healthier kids' nutrition. They come with a cute little reusable container, and monthly refill packs.  Less packaging and waste makes this one a no-brainer.

Iron
from Hiya

For years my child's doctor said my sensory PICA kiddo needed iron. But she also said that giving iron to children was tricky cause it can make their stomachs hurt.  I shopped at the natural grocery store, asked other parents online, and just couldn't find one that seemed safe for kids without all the extra gunk they put in kid's vitamins.

Enter Hiya.  They just came out with an iron supplement.  I was so happy I could get that too from the company I already trusted.

Unwind
from Young Living

Most of our Sensory kiddos (us too!) are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium can help with sleep, mood, and bowel movements.  These little "pixies" are a tasty powder way to get magnesium in without taking a pill.  My son instantly (within 5 minutes) gets noticably calmer after taking these.  They also contain L-Theanine, which can elevate GABA levels, helping promote relaxation and lower anxiety.

Perfect for winding down for bedtime!

Mightypro Probiotic
from Young Living

With a pre- and pro- biotic, this little powdered "pixie" stick helps create a healthy gut, which we know keeps everything else working smoothly.

Sensory Life Skills/Hygiene
For sensory kids, basic life skills and hygeine can be not-so-basic.  Tasks that can take other people just minutes can turn into hours and loads of frustration for a person with sensory issues.  Any tools that can lessen that load for both kid and parent are a must in my house!
Hum Toothbrush
from Colgate

This smart toothbrush "gamifies" brush time by rewarding points, unlocking levels, adding fun stickers, and shows which part of their teeth they hit or missed.  Great for parents to track their kids' progress too!

Hairbrush
from Crave

My kiddo has a SENSITIVE scalp, plus thick curly hair, so I've gone through tons of brushes and combs looking for something he'd tolerate.  This one has 90,000 reviews from all hair types.  Finally a winner!

One United Leave in Conditioner
from Redkin

Although spendy, this leave in conditioner makes brushing through tangles so much easier.  When cutting off the thick tangled curls isn't an option, I'll pay anything to get through hair brushing without all the fighting!

Cleaner Living
You've probably heard about how toxins in our home and on our body can distrupt important brain/body development.  So, if you can switch out even a few, you're helping to give our kids' bodies less of the bad stuff while you add more of the good!
Thieves Household Cleaner
from Young Living

If I were going to make only one switch to cleaner living, THIS is the product to get.  Not only is it made from PLANTS (no yucky chemicals!), but it has such a lovely smell. This one bottle lasts me probably 3-4 months. You put a capful in a spray bottle and dilute with water.

It cleans EVERYTHING in your home....countertops, floors, bathrooms, kitchen table, highchairs, windows, appliances, EVERYTHING!

Deodorant
from Primally Pure

This woman sweats.  A lot.  So I need a deodorant that's clean, but also that works.  I've tried so many hippy deodorants over the years, and this one feels like a "normal" one.  Glides on smooth, leaves a lubricated feeling all day, smells AMAZING, and cuts out the stank.

You've probably heard that aluminum in our deodorant is a no-no. Especially for women, having a clean deodorant near our lymph nodes and glands is critical.  This one is free from aluminum, parabens, fragrance (yay!), triclosan, talc, propylene glycol and anything artificial.  FINALLY!!!!

Oil Diffusers
from Young Living

With stinky dogs and stinky kids in my house, I was always reaching for the Febreze, and/or Glade Plug Ins.  Little did I know that both of those things were loaded with synthetic fragrance which were harming my family (and dogs).

I've switched out all my air fresheners and candles for air diffusers in every room.  Not only do they make the house smell great, but with pure therapeutic essential oils from plants, I'm now ADDING beneficial air to their little bodies.  And the kids love filling up their diffuser with oils and watching the mist fill their rooms.
